2014 has been such an amazing year. I can’t help but look back and feel so much happiness. 2012-2013 were really tough years for me emotionally and physically; I was sick a lot. In 2013 I decided I was going to pursue my dream of working in the entertainment industry, specifically in radio broadcasting. How? I wasn’t sure yet, but I just knew it was going to happen. I researched for countless hours on how to break into radio; the clear answer was to go to school and get an internship. Working full-time made it difficult, but i was able to take evening classes, online classes, and Saturday classes to make it happen. I was determined. By the second semester I was ready (not really, but I couldn’t wait) to take on an internship. I applied at what seems like a million places. I would check my email religiously in hopes that someone had replied to my application. It took a few months to get a call. I remember one day after work, I had a strange feeling like something was going to happen. I had just parked and I received a call from someone at Latino 96.3 (now known as Mega 96.3) offering me an interview for an internship. I was beyond happy, I called everyone telling them I finally got an interview. Fast-forward to the interview; I went in and spoke to Mike and he asked me what days I could come in (keep in mind I work at UCLA full-time). I told him I could come two days out of the week; I was willing to lose money in order to gain knowledge. I remember towards the end of our interview. He told me he saw the hustler in me and offered me the job – on the spot. One of the best moments. I ended up interning for the production department and eventually I started helping out with Mike and Rebecca’s Saturday show. I would show up every Saturday morning just to watch them do their thing. It was an amazing opportunity and I will forever be grateful to Mike. I was able to do on-air work (commercials) and got to meet some amazing people that are now like family. Towards the end of that internship I was so afraid of not having anything else lined up, so there I go again applying everywhere. I remember getting a call from the Program Director of Fox Sports (Clear Channel!), asking me to come in for an interview. I was beyond happy because it was perfect timing. I ended up going the next day and missing my evening class. I talked to the program director for hours and he gave me some of the best advice. He even offered to listen to my radio show (I had a college radio show at the time). I honestly didn’t think he would actually listen, but he did. He ended up calling me a few days later and telling me that I shouldn’t settle for a board-op position for Fox sports, because my passion was evidently music. He told me he would be more than happy to recommend me to any other position for any clear channel station and gave me some pointers on my show, but said he overall really enjoyed listening to my show (yay!).
It was my last week at Latino 96.3 and I remember being at home searching different hip hop websites and stressing about where I was going to intern next. That same night, I get a comment on one of my pictures from White Label Radio’s host, Melloe Won. He asked if I would be interested in interning for them and helping out with their social media. I was beyond excited, so of course I applied and got the position on our second meet. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect; as soon as I left Latino 96.3 I started my new chapter with White Label Radio. This new chapter would be an amazing 8/9 months. I learned so much from Melloe and Emma, and I looked forward to being with them every Wednesday (our show prep days) and attending events; even when it was just the three of us. It’s been amazing to see how much and how quickly White Label Radio is evolving and growing. It makes me so happy to know that I was a part of that process. I’m honored that they allowed me to join them in their journey.
Around that time I also applied for an internship position with Jen Deleon from Skee.TV. She called me in for an interview and hired me on the spot. She’s been such a blessing in the short amount of time that she’s been in my life. I am so thankful to have someone that I admire so much, helping me with my journey. It still so surreal to me; the people that I looked up (and still do) were people that I only followed on social media, and now I have the ability to call them and interact with them on a more personal level.
I have ended my journey with White Label Radio, and I’m ready to embark on this new journey. I have a long way to go, and so much learning and growing to do. I hope that I can inspire at least one person to follow their dreams no matter how long it takes to reach them. I’m really excited, and have faith that 2015 will be an amazing year! I wish you all love and success in the new year! Be great!
