Artist Spotlight: EarthGang

Spotlighting the next generation artist.

By Zaida Diaz

EarthGang, ATL’s prominent rap duo compromised of Johnny Venus and Doctur Dot, are gaining acclaim in today’s hip-hop scene and for good reason. They’ve toured with the likes of Ab-Soul, Mac Miller and Bas. Dreamville fans might also catch them share the stage with J.I.D. on J. Cole’s “4 Your Eyez Only” tour.

From their 2014 project Shallow Graves for Toys to their latest Spillage Village release Bears Like This Too Much, EarthGang has delivered a distinct sound backed with hard-hitting lyrics. The Hampton University graduates show depth in their music as they often tackle social issues involving race, faith and self-perception. They also have a knack for making feel-good jams that’ll get you on your feet. We’re showcasing a few of our favored EarthGang tracks below for those who might not be as familiar.

Ultra Rare

A break down of what separates EarthGang from the lot of trend hoppers in the game.

Masturpeace

As the track title implies our boys search for peace, but in order to arrive at their destination they deem it necessary to reflect on their shortcomings. It’s a poignant vibe filled with heavy word play and colorful imagery.

Voodoo

The J. Cole and Childish Major-produced track comes from the third installment of Spillage Village’s Bears Like series. On Voodoo, Dot and Venus hold their heads high as they return to their city having reached a level of success by staying true to self.

Simba

Earthgang will surely lift your spirits with this vibrant song about having no regrets.

Punchanella

The song is inspired by a childhood game where children play in a circle and get footloose. Venus and Dot told XXL that they made the track with that same “free and rebellious vibe” in mind. You can’t sit this one out.
