Spotlighting the next generation artist.
By Zaida Diaz
Dreamville’s Ari Lennox is a free-spirited fem with soul reminiscent of an Etta James. The D.C. native first began to generate buzz after skillfully covering songs on YouTube. When she linked up with her manager in 2012, she began composing work that reflected life’s imperfections. Three years later J. Cole’s record label announced her as the first female artist under his imprint. Lennox hit the ground running and pushed out an EP inspired by her past love titled PHO (yes like the Vietnamese soup). The seven-track project, much like pho, is a warm treat. Here’s a taste of Lennox’s artistry:
It’s scary to be vulnerable, but oh so powerful and that’s exactly what Lennox does here (that, and show off those powerhouse vocals).
She had us at “kisses like marshmallow.”
Perfect for cruisin’ with your honey. The track was recently featured in the teen drama Everything Everything.
Lennox lets her ratchet-trap side loose over this DJ Grumble beat, while labelmate Cozz adds a verse that makes it that much more steamy.
La La La La
This is what it’s like to feel haunted by the ghost of a once passionate love.
