6 Tips That Will Help You Get Over Your Fear of The Gym

Similarly to the first day of school, going to the gym can be intimidating, but I promise it will get easier. Push through your anxiety. You got this! Here are six tips that helped me overcome my gym phobia.

  1. No one cares: If you’re like me, then you might be concerned with being judged for not already being in shape. I remember actually saying, ‘I’ll go the gym once I lose weight” bish whet? Honestly, everyone is so consumed with their own workout that they don’t have time to pass judgment on what you’re doing.

  1. Find what works for you: I hate cardio. Okay, maybe hate is a strong word, but I HATE cardio. I use to think that working out meant just doing cardio. I was wrong. I started going with a really great friend of mine (shout-out Zaida) who enjoyed weightlifting. At first, I was hesitant — can I really do this? Should I really be doing this instead of cardio? I gave it a try and it changed the game for me. Weightlifting helped me shed some weight, but more importantly — it made me feel like such a badass. There are so many options —  find what works for you!

  1. Give it your all: It’s easy to show up at the gym and be on your phone or chit-chat with your gym partner. However, it’s so important to be present during your workouts. Focusing on what you’re doing is an awesome way to forget about the shit that’s stressing you out. Honor that time and make every rep count.

  1. You’re already ahead: By showing up and working out — however rigorous it may have been — you’re already ahead of those people that are merely thinking of going to the gym. Getting yourself to go is probably the toughest part. You go, baby!

  1. Don’t compare: Everyone’s journey is different. Don’t compare yourself to someone that has been working out for longer than you. I know you don’t want to hear this because I didn’t either, but results take time. Transformations can be slow at first and then out of nowhere, you’ll start noticing that your clothes fit differently. Okay, I see you. 😉

  1. Your playlist matters: Nothing makes me more excited for the gym than a bomb-ass playlist. You’ve always wanted to be a DJ, right? Well, here’s your chance! Curate songs that pump you up for your workout and make you feel motivated. *plays ‘Hit ’em up’*
